Legacy of Kain: Ascendance is the first new entry in the franchise since Legacy of Kain: Defiance, originally released in 2003. The game introduces Elaleth as a third playable character alongside the series' established protagonists, Kain and Raziel. A side-scrolling action game with minimalist progression, Ascendance explores Raziel's human life from childhood through his death and dark rebirth under Kain, told largely through the perspective of Elaleth, Raziel's younger sister and a character new to the Nosgoth universe.

Elaleth is granted vampiric abilities, including wings, by a demonic servant who manipulates her grief and thirst for revenge against her brother into a series of missions across different eras. The narrative draws heavily from the lore established in the comic series The Dead Shall Rise, and the same creative team behind it leads the game's story.
